This book showcases photos I took of the Sakuragicho wall of graffiti in around June 2001. Importantly, this book doesn’t provide a history or explain the wall or the artists behind it. It is based on two of the original core elements of graffiti culture - anonymity and mystery. This book is therefore simply an observation; an outside-in selection of public-space artwork provided as a visual treat. Enjoy it.
Looking back, I really wish I had taken more photos. But, at the time, using film, you had to be selective. On top of that, just getting good shots was challenging: The wall was right next to a major multi-lane road and the space between the wall and the pylons was quite narrow. Getting front-on shots, except for at the mural section that was on a separate wall, was just not doable. Lastly, I only had a simple 35 mm automatic and took the photos on two separate days-one in good natural light and another in twilight. Considering the challenges, I reckon the shots are well worth sharing and I hope you think so, too.
I wish to express my sincere respect and appreciation to all the writers, especially from Kanagawa and Tokyo, who made the Sakuragicho Wall a special place of inspiration and visual enjoyment.
